What's next for EML: A sneak peek at v3 and v4

Following the recent release of EML v2.7 and its advanced custom manifest support, it is time to look at the bigger picture. The EML ecosystem is growing rapidly, and our internal roadmap has evolved to meet the increasing demands of server administrators and modpack creators.

Here is a look at what is coming next for the Electron Minecraft Launcher ecosystem.

EML v3: The multi-instance era

The upcoming v3 release focuses entirely on scale. Currently, managing multiple distinct modpacks or servers requires deploying multiple instances of the EML AdminTool.

Version 3 will change this by transforming the AdminTool into a multi-instance manager. A single backend and a single dashboard will allow you to manage, configure, and deploy updates for several independent launchers and modpacks simultaneously.

EML v4: The infrastructure revolution

While v3 is about scaling out, v4 is a complete reimagining of what EML can do. The goal is to bridge the gap between launcher management and server administration, turning EML into a comprehensive infrastructure tool.

This is a massive undertaking. Here is a preview of the core features planned for v4:

  • Unified client-server deployments: We are building a system where deploying a modpack update pushes changes not only to your players’ launchers but simultaneously directly to your Minecraft server, perfectly synchronized.

  • Total under-the-hood rewrite: EML AdminTool is being rebuilt from the ground up using a modern, modular architecture. Expect unprecedented stability, a lighter resource footprint, and a much faster interface.

  • Smarter file management: Say goodbye to overwritten settings. We are working on differential file updates, allowing you to push default configurations (like options.txt) without wiping out a player’s custom keybinds (yes, really!).

  • Direct platform integrations: We are aiming to streamline how you add mods by introducing native, direct reference links to platforms like Modrinth and CurseForge, reducing manual uploads and saving storage space.

  • Advanced identity & security: Say hello to EML Auth, a dedicated authentication component to handle both admin and player identities securely, offering tighter control over who can access your launcher and when.

  • Professional workflows: For power users, we are exploring a dedicated CLI tool to allow modpack-as-code deployments directly from your terminal or CI/CD pipelines.

Version 4 is a massive undertaking focused on stability, security, and a seamless administration experience. We will share more concrete details and timelines as development progresses.
